Protect your family and your computer

How do you protect your computer? A computer can be a work machine, a household reference source and a child's toy during different times of the day depending on who in the family is using it.

As computers become simpler to use, even for a four year old, the technology computers use is still highly technical and complex. So, one wonders how we, as parents, can secure our computers and families from modern threats targeting them through this technology?

With the ease and freedom of surfing the information highway, the responsibility to allow access to useful and safe resources and to avoid resources that are harmful and unsafe is becoming more important for us to think about and act on each day.

How does online security affect me?

The example of a four year old girl, who proudly showed her parents a new game that she found on their computer, is an example of what could happen to anyone.  On one hand, her parents were impressed that she had found a link to an online backgammon game which they did not know was installed on their computer, however, on the other hand, they were shocked to see someone writing "hello" to the child in a message window that came with the game.  At four years old the child did not notice the message but the parents did.

In ideal situations this event would be harmless, as the person using online backgammon would hopefully have been an ethical person playing backgammon as a social outlet, but there is the possibility, that the person may not have a well formed conscience and the outcome could be very different.  The event highlights to us parents how easy it is for someone outside the home to enter through this "virtual medium", the computer and make contact with vulnerable members of our family.

Although, there is no substitute for 100% parental supervision and education of anyone using computers and the Internet, there is software to help reduce the risk of this type and many more types of invasion through the home and internet.

What else do I have to look out for?

To effectively reduce threats arriving to you and your family through your computer, the ideal software would address these broad areas of online risk.

Malware

Software that acts like:

·          viruses - spreading itself from one computer to another,

·          spyware - sending information from your computer to another,

·          trojans - that provide a legitimate feature but have a hidden agenda behind it,

·          rootkits - that take control of your computer system without permission,

·          bots - that run automated tasks over the Internet and more...

Identity theft

Through

·          Fraudulent email and scams while you shop, bank or pay bills online.

·          Malware used by cyber-criminals to steal banking credentials.

·          Silently-installed rootkits used by malware or hackers to evade traditional antivirus products

SPAM

E-mail that interrupts e-mail services and reduces effectiveness of receiving e-mails you do want.

Access to inappropriate websites and

Websites with violent, adult, or racist content, as well as other inappropriate websites.

Prevention and recovery from computer damage

Safeguard important documents from accidental loss or damage and removing unnecessary registry entries, deleting temporary files and speeding up your hard disk.
